About The Campsite

Tucked inside a private sugar cane plantation and built under the shade of a mango grove lies the best kept secret of camping experiences near the Udawalawe Wildlife Sanctuary.

Camp Hasthi was built as a deliberately simple, permanent and authentic camping experience to help you explore the best of Sri Lanka’s wildlife, village life, cuisine and culture all at once.

You sleep in large comfortable tents to be woken up by peacock calls, a choice of sweet or spicy tropical breakfasts, hot tea or coffee and a dose of warm morning sun. Before you clamber aboard a safari jeep, ask us about the rest of our well kept secrets.

Guest Reviews

We spent two nights at Camp Hasthi in early September. And what a two nights! We were the only guests, and were made to feel so welcome. The service, food and accommodation were all spot-on. Syd, Raja, Auntie and the other guys were so very helpful and knowledgeable. The camp bustled daily with all sorts of bugs, birds and mesmerising monitor lizards. At nights, the whole camp was lit with lanterns and eating under the stars was magical. A fantastic spot to stay for safaris, or even to just stop, unplug and unwind. Restful and relaxing, and very peaceful. Thanks so much for a lovely stay

My teenage son and i spent two nights at Camp Hasthi and had a great time. The safari style tents are comfortable and have attached bathrooms and even (solar powered) electricity so its glamping rather than very basic camping! Take ear plugs if you are a light sleeper or the sqwarking peacocks, cicadas or birds will keep you awake. The staff looked after us so well, bringing early morning tea before our safari in the national park and setting up our meals in different parts of the camp. This is so much more than a base from which to go on safari. You can relax and do nothing except read in a hammock if you wish but put yourself in the hands of the camp team and they'll arrange some delightful local activities that give you a real flavour of village and rural life. (Thankyou Kumundi for the spontaneous tour of your village and visit to your family!) If you want air con (other than the natural version created by a breeze through mango trees), you'll freak out if there are bugs in your sink and you cant bear the prospect of a wifi free zone then Camp Hasthi is not for you. However, if you like the idea of reconnecting with the simple life, taking a dip in the lake village-style and sitting round a fire pit under the stars then you'll make some special memories here.

Ross and I really enjoyed our two night stay at Camp Hasthi. From our arrival to our departure, we were looked after in every respect. Firstly meals were wonderful and served in various delightful locations around the camp, complete with fairy lights, candles and table linen - and with an impressive water monitor ambling by! Accommodation was glamping - comfortable and clean. Our two safaris to Udawalawe National Park were packed with bird, mammal and reptile sightings - wonderful! Also much appreciated was the attention to our specific interests. For example, Ross in particular, has a real passion for microbats. Syd, our extraordinary host, on learning this, quickly organised the crew for a special excursion to a rarely frequented cave about one hour drive away from camp. While bat spotting might not be a trip for everyone (!), it definitely hit the spot for Ross. We want to mention this to illustrate the staff's desire to accommodate their client's individual interests. The staff really deserve special mention as they were wonderful in all respects. Rajah was extraordinary and not just at mealtimes, ever attentive. A special mention to Kumadini for her genuine sweetness and care. We really enjoyed philosophical conversations with Syd on all manner of topics - a truly interesting and knowledgeable person. The staff "behind the scenes" also deserve recognition as they all worked together remarkably to provide a unique experience. We loved Sri Lanka and Camp Hasthi is a special memory. We recommend it!
